Environmental Health
The Environmental Health Department works to keep our air, water, and food safe; it regulates, protects, and promotes the health of everyone in Alameda County by enforcing environmental health codes to reduce exposure to toxins and diseases.
The Active Communities initiative recognizes the benefit of eating well and physical activity on one’s mental health and wellbeing. Research shows a link between what we eat, movement, and how we feel. This approach allows purposeful action towards a healthy mindset and ultimately healthy living.
A series of free courses offering nutrition education, food safety awareness, and cooking skills. The virtual and/or in-person classes take place throughout the year.
Our program promotes healthy habits among preschool students and families by assisting childcare sites in adopting nutrition and physical activity best practices.
We partner with small, neighborhood grocery stores far from supermarkets to promote health and well-being and offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, healthy snacks, and water.
In partnership with Alameda County Social Services Area on Aging, older adults participate in Bingocize, an evidence-based health promotion program combining physical activity and nutrition with the game of bingo! This happens over a 10-week period in a fun and interactive way.
Recipe4Health (R4H) is a nationally recognized, award-winning “Food as Medicine” model that integrates food-based interventions into healthcare settings to treat, prevent, and reverse chronic conditions, address food and nutrition insecurity, and improve health and racial equity.
Alameda County Nutrition Services partners with schools, local recreation and community centers, and community-based organizations to expand youth experiences in nutrition, cooking, gardening, physical activity and healthy messaging.
