School Based Behavioral Health Services (SBBH)

Alameda County offers mental health services in a number of schools to enrolled children and youth with full scope Medi-Cal who meet medical necessity for Medi-Cal Specialty Mental Health Services. These services are made available onsite during the school day and after school hours as needed.

School Based Behavioral Health Services (SBBH)

ACBHD created its SBBH Provider Network in 2009 to create a shared model and approach to school-based behavioral health in partnership with school districts in Alameda County.  ACBHD currently contracts with 14 community-based mental health agencies to provide mental health services year-round in 180+ schools in 13 school districts across Alameda County. Services are provided an onsite during the school day, after school hours as needed, and during school breaks. Providers in partnership with site administrators are given confidential office space to provide services.

SBBH services are available to children and youth who:

  • Attend a school that hosts a School Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) program
  • Have Full Scope Medi-Cal
  • Experiencing moderate – severe mental health symptoms (upon screening)
  • On occasion, live near a SBBH school site as referred by ACCESS

Accessing SBBH Services

  • Referrals for SBBH services are primarily made through the school site’s Coordination of Services Teams (COST). COST is a multidisciplinary team of school staff and providers who integrate learning supports and resources for students, and look at the overall landscape of school climate, trends, and needs.
  • For schools who do not have a SBBH program on their site, referrals can be made by calling ACBHD’s ACCESS line: 1-800-491-9099.
