Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are a group of diseases that are caused by several distinct families of viruses. Ebola and Marburg diseases are both VHFs.

On November 14, 2025, the Ethiopia Ministry of Health (MOH) reported the country’s first Marburg outbreak.  They reported 14 laboratory-confirmed illnesses, including nine deaths, from Marburg virus disease in the country’s South and Sidama regions. On January 26, 2026, the Ethiopian MOH declared the end of the Marburg virus disease outbreak. Ethiopia is now in a 90-day period of enhanced surveillance.

On September 4, 2025, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention officially declared an outbreak of Ebola in the remote Bulape health zone in Kasai Province. This is the 16th Ebola outbreak in DRC since the virus was discovered there in 1976. The outbreak was declared over on December 1, 2025, with 53 confirmed cases, 11 probable cases, and 45 deaths.
