The Public Health Department focuses on community and population-level health, preventing and addressing root causes of health inequity across a range of communicable and chronic diseases.
Environmental Health
The Environmental Health Department works to keep our air, water, and food safe; it regulates, protects, and promotes the health of everyone in Alameda County by enforcing environmental health codes to reduce exposure to toxins and diseases.
The Community Health Services Division also contains the following programs: Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Program (AOD), Asthma Start Program
Care Partners, Healthy Brain Initiative, Healthy Nail Salon Program, Older Adults Healthy Results Program, Project New Start, Recipe 4 Health, and Tobacco Control Program (TCP).

Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Program (AOD)
AOD works closely with youth, families, schools, and community partners to reduce and prevent high risk behaviors in youth and ensure all are college, career, and life ready.
Asthma Start assists families in managing childhood asthma with education, home assessments, and personalized action plans. These help people control asthma symptoms and enhance quality of life.
Alameda County breastfeeds! We help babies get the best start in life by ensuring families and their healthcare providers, childcare providers, and public health services have support for breastfeeding.
Alameda County Care Partners is a care coordination program that provides engagement, information, education, resources, and advocacy to low-income older adults and people with disabilities in Alameda County so that they can stay safely at home with an improved quality of life.
The Healthy Brain Initiative seeks to create a better coordinated, aligned, and equity-focused system of care for those at risk for or living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) and their caregivers.
The Healthy Nail Salon Program promotes the use of healthier and safer practices and products to protect the health of salon staff, customers, and the environment. See the list of recognized salons.
OAHR provides free intensive home-visiting nurse case management for older adults 60+ who are having trouble managing health conditions due to psychosocial challenges.
Project New Start offers holistic support for at-risk youth. It aids in tattoo removal alongside mentoring and social services. Participants commit to 50 hours of community service and create vocational or educational plans with local youth agencies.
Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in California. TCP aims to reduce tobacco-related harm through policy engagement, education, and community partnerships. Services include policy development support, tobacco treatment resources, partnership with youth tobacco prevention programs, and enforcement of tobacco laws to create a healthier environment for all.
