Reducing violence in Alameda County requires a coordinated approach that responds to the needs of residents. Prevention, intervention, and community transformation efforts are all needed to reduce violence in Alameda County.
Violence prevention stops violence before it occurs by addressing the underlying drivers of harm. Efforts such as youth programming promote positive influences within communities.
Violence intervention addresses immediate risks to stop violence from escalating or recurring. Intervention programs engage those who are involved in or at highest risk of violence.
Community transformation focuses on long-term community centered strategies that prioritize healing and provide resources to eliminate the structural inequities that lead to violence. These long-term efforts create thriving communities and neighborhoods where interventions strategies are ultimately not needed.
The Office of Violence Prevention is committed to advancing these strategies in collaboration with community partners:
- Fund and implement community violence intervention strategies to interrupt cycles of violence and support those at highest risk.
- Support prevention efforts that promote healing, create opportunity, and shift norms around violence.
- Work with communities to eliminate structural inequities and promote peaceful and healthy families and communities.
The Office of Violence Prevention’s efforts reinforce Alameda County’s Vision 2036. Efforts will help achieve the 10X goals for a Crime-Free County, Health for All, and Eliminate Poverty & Hunger in support of the shared visions for a Thriving & Resilient Population and Safe & Livable Communities.
