Inpatient Hospitals

Psychiatric acute short-term hospitals and longer-term subacute inpatient hospitals.

Inpatient Hospitals

Psychiatric acute short-term hospitals and longer-term subacute inpatient hospitals offer further stabilization after an acute stay. Both hospitals require meeting certain criteria for admission. For an acute inpatient hospital stay, someone can call 911, 988 or go to John George Psychiatric Hospital, Amber House Crisis Stabilization Unit, or an Emergency Department anywhere in the county. For a subacute inpatient, a person must be referred by the acute hospital for consideration for admission.

Acute Inpatient Hospital

An Acute Inpatient Hospital provides intensive short-term stabilization of a crisis for persons deemed gravely disabled. Individuals are typically on a 5150 (a hold up to 3 days for assessment and evaluation) for danger to self, danger to others, or grave disability. Medications, nursing, psychiatry, and social work services are all provided during the hospital stay. The typical length of stay is between 5-7 days to stabilize the acute phase of a person’s mental health crisis.

Subacute Hospital (Mental Health Rehabilitation Center)

Subacute Hospitals provide a longer length of stay for individuals who have had an acute crisis. They provide similar services to acute inpatient hospitals in a less intensive manner so a person may continue to work on their recovery. In order to access this service, an individual must meet admission criteria and be referred by an acute inpatient psychiatric hospital.
