Clinician Guidance
Pregnant Persons
- Infection at any time during pregnancy and in the 8 weeks prior to conception can lead to Congenital Zika Syndrome.
- Pregnant women should be encouraged not to travel to areas with a risk of Zika virus transmission
- Currently, there is no evidence suggesting past Zika virus infection poses an increased risk of birth defects for subsequent pregnancies once the virus has completely cleared a woman’s body.
- Although the Zika virus has been detected in breast milk, transmission of the Zika virus infection through breastfeeding has not been documented. CDC encourages mothers infected with Zika to continue breastfeeding.
Testing
- CDPH VRDL Zika Laboratory Testing Guidance
- If in doubt about the appropriate testing route to use, physicians should contact the Alameda County Acute Communicable Disease section at acutecd@acgov.org or call (510) 267-3250
