As of June 11, 2026, 2,073 confirmed measles cases have been reported by 40 jurisdictions in the U.S; 93% of these cases were unvaccinated. This is almost the same number of measles cases in the U.S. in all of 2025 in only 6 months. There have been 30 new outbreaks (defined as 3 or more related cases) reported in 2026, and 93% of confirmed cases are outbreak-associated.
As of June 15, 2026, 50 confirmed measles cases, 94% unvaccinated, have been reported in California this year including a Santa Clara County resident who traveled through SFO and other public sites while infectious on June 8. There were 25 confirmed measles cases in California in all of 2025.
Consider measles in any patient presenting with a febrile rash illness, especially if unvaccinated for measles or traveled internationally in the last 21 days. The AMA/CDC Be on Alert for Travel-Related Measles webinar may be a helpful resource.
- If you suspect measles in a patient, please follow the steps listed in this infographic.
- Patients with suspected measles should be placed in an Airborne Infection Isolation Room immediately, if possible. Detailed infection control guidance can be found here.
- Report suspected measles cases immediately, while the patient is still in your office to ACPHD Acute Communicable Disease Section by phone at (510) 267-3250; after hours call (925) 422-7595 and ask for the Public Health On-call Duty Officer. CALL, DO NOT FAX.
- Collect Respiratory swabs (NP and OP) and urine for measles PCR testing at the Alameda County Public Health Lab with approval from ACPHD. When directed, serum samples for Measles IgM/IgG should be collected and routed to the California Department of Public Health-Viral and Rickettsial Disease Lab (VRDL). Do NOT use commercial laboratories for suspect measles cases. For detailed instructions, please see ACPHD’s Measles Testing & Specimen Routing Procedures document.
- Ensure patients with suspected measles understand that they must isolate pending test results.
